LG Chem Signs Joint Venture to Supply Hyundai Mobis With Li-ion Batteries

http://4evriders.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/mock-up-of-lg-chem-battery-for-chevrolet-volt_s.jpg“>http://4evriders.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/mock-up-of-lg-chem-battery-for-chevrolet-volt_s-241×300.jpg” alt=”mock-up-of-lg-chem-battery-for-chevrolet-volt_s” width=”241″ height=”300″ />Batteries, batteries, batteries. That’s looking like the name of the game these days.

Automakers have shown they can build decent conventional hybrids, and are about to show how well they can do on all-electric and extended-range, gas-electric hybrids – but the wall they all run into is how far their cars and trucks can go before the electrons run out.

That’s in the batteries, and with few exceptions (Nissan and Hyundai come to mind) automakers don’t make batteries. They may assemble the individual cells into battery packs designed for their specific vehicles, but it is at the level of the cell – and the chemistry incorporated into that cell – that the ability of a battery to store and release energy is controlled.

So its good to see so much activity in the battery development world.

Latest is in South Korea, where Hyundai Mobis and LG Chem have announced a joint venture agreement to produce lithium-ion batteries for hybrids. The $34-million venture is scheduled to start producing in the second half next year, with a goal of building batteries for as any as 200,000 vehicles a year.

LG also is a supplier to General Motors, for the Chevy Volt,  and Hyundai Motors (a cousin to Hyundai Mobis in the extended Hyundai family conglomerate) and its Kia subsidiary – for the recently introduced Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)-electric  hybrids.

They don’t talk about battery R&D in the announcement, just production, but LG Chem’s already done a lot of work on a flat-pack lithium polymer battery cell that’s easier to cool and to package into bundles for hybrids and EVs, and we expect that it won’t stop there.

The company earlier this year broke ground on an http://blogs.edmunds.com/greencaradvisor/greencaradvisor/2009/06/s-koreas-lg-chem-announces-plans-to-invest-800m-to-build-ev-battery-plant.html“>$800 million lithium-ion polymer battery manufacturing plant of its own (no Hyundai investment that we know of)  to supply the cells for the Volt and Hyundai-Kia battery packs.

China: Roewe 550 hybrid in the works, battery maybe foreign

The hybrid car market in China has yet to be exploited on a wide scale, BYD have entered the market with their BYD F3DM but that has yet to see mass market sales, the Prius is sold in China with a sky high price tag as is the Honda Civic Hybrid, Toyota are making waves about bringing their Camry hybrid to China but nothing has been cemented as of yet.

The Roewe 550 really is the dark horse of the Chinese car industry, its a Chinese built (with British help) compact sedan that has managed to take on the almighty Ford Focus in the compact sedan segment and has actually managed to hold its own against the mighty media machine of the blue oval.

Rival expresses doubts about Fisker

The top executive at the electric-car company Tesla Motors said Thursday that he is skeptical about the viability of rival startup Fisker Automotive, which plans to build its plug-in hybrid cars in Delaware.
Elon Musk, a 38-year-old entrepreneur who has launched Internet, spacecraft and alternative energy companies, spoke at the University of Delaware. Following his address, Musk said he has “some reservations about the feasibility of Fisker’s approach.”
He declined to discuss specifics, but said “it’s very tough to create a car company” and there are sizable engineering obstacles to building an electric car in particular.

UK: F1 designer reveals world's most efficient electric car

An ex-Formula One designer has revealed the prototype for what he believes will be the world’s most efficient electric car.
Gordon Murray showed off the petrol version of his T.27 vehicle yesterday at the launch of a £9million project to develop a new, all-electric affordable urban car.
The former McLaren designer will oversee the development of four prototypes over the next 16 months

The T.27 will be the world’s most efficient electric car due to its low weight
and ‘clean sheet of paper design’.
It will be created using a manufacturing process, called iStream. All the parts are designed by computer and welded together rather than stamped out of metal sheets. This means iStream factories can be just one fifth the size of traditional plants.

USA: Federal Tax Credits Abound and Rebound

Electric car tax credits

In addition, don’t forget the electric car and conversions kit tax incentives that expire in 2012 (ranges from $2500 to $7500 depending on the car’s battery capacity, weight and other similar items). Specific timeframes do apply separately to each of these tax credits. Check the following website for possible qualifiers.

UK: Sainsbury’s Offers Free London Electric Car Charging

UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is installing electric car charging systems at 11 of its London supermarkets. The retailer intends to give away charging services to customers.
Sainsbury’s aims to help turn London into an “electric vehicle superhighway,” said Neil Sachdev, Sainsbury’s Commercial Director.
Sainsbury’s claims to already be one of the UK’s largest users of electric vehicles, according to a press release.
“We hope that this initiative will encourage more of our customers to follow our lead,” Sachdev said.

Nissan Looks Beyond Its First Electric Car

http://4evriders.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/nissan-leaf.jpg“>http://4evriders.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/nissan-leaf-300×204.jpg” alt=”nissan-leaf” width=”300″ height=”204″ />Nissan released an image yesterday of a light commercial electric vehicle concept. It’s just a sketch, but the drawing signals that Nissan is moving forward with plans to build an entire electric vehicle program—rather than focusing on a single vehicle.

So far, most of Nissan’s electric plans have focused on the all-electric five-seat Nissan Leaf, which will make its US debut in late 2010, followed by a European release in 2011 and a global rollout in 2012. The new sketch depicts a small multi-purpose commercial van—something like a beefed-up Nissan Leaf for businesses. Clearly targeting congested European cities, Nissan said, “The low-cost multi-purpose vehicle would allow…van and taxi drivers to enter urban areas where CO2 emissions are restricted.”

Renault to make electric car in Spain

MADRID, Nov 6 (Reuters) – French auto maker Renault (RENA.PA) said on Friday it would build its new electric car based on the Twizy Z.E. Concept at its Valladolid plant in northern Spain.
Renault chose Valladolid for its know-how and competitiveness in making compact cars, and Spain for its proximity to the electric car’s target market of Western Europe.
“With the production of the vehicle based on the Twizy Z.E. Concept, Valladolid will be the first factory in Spain to mass produce an electric vehicle,” Jean Pierre Laurent, managing director of Renault in Spain, said in a statement.

USA: Electric Car Plant Bringing Jobs To Stockton

An electric car company is setting up shop in Stockton and is planning on building cars there, potentially providing a huge boost and much-needed jobs to the local economy.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was on hand at the new world headquarters of Electric Vehicles International on Wednesday, calling the new green industry facility part of California’s “new economic foundation.”
“EVI could have relocated anywhere in the world but they chose to come here to California because we have created the right environment for clean-tech and green-tech companies,” Schwarzenegger said.
